The Young Australian Broadway Chorus is a division of the CPCA and commenced in 1995 when four music theatre ensembles were created for students wishing to concentrate on song and dance.
In 1998 the company staged its first show “A Winter Gala” at the National Theatre. The two hundred or so students proudly wore their performance uniform which comprised of cummerbund, braces, dance pants, shoes and t-shirts with the Young Australian Broadway Chorus logo emblazoned across the front. Black curtains and a cyclorama (a large curtain positioned at the back of the stage) provided the scenic effects. The fully costumed, spectacular shows we enjoy today were yet to evolve.
In November and December 2008 the company celebrated its tenth anniversary with a special end of season show at the National Theatre - “It’s a Wild, Wild Party.” Excerpts from Rags, Salad Days, Godspell, and Man of La Mancha were performed representing the very early days, with Jersey Boys, Xanadu, and the Glorious Ones representing the present. The finale focused on the future, tomorrow, with Sondheim’s Our Time.
