The Young Australian Broadway Chorus offers an outcome-driven curriculum, with weekly rehearsals providing a clear structure and learning outcomes which culminates with all students performing on-stage. Performances are held twice a year in June and November/December at the National Theatre in St. Kilda.
Core Curriculum Objectives:
Students are introduced to a range of music theatre styles including the music of Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Kander & Ebb, Lloyd Webber, Sondheim and Schoenberg. Rehearsal repertoire is also drawn from popular and modern music, particularly to demonstrate musical construction and style, vocal character and to work on harmony singing.
Repertoire is chosen according to the age and level of each group with an emphasis on skill development.
Classes consist of up to 30 students of similar age and ability. Training groups rehearse for two hours each week. Performing and Advanced Performing Groups rehearse for three hours each week. The company’s top performing group, Triple Threats, rehearse for four and half hours each week.
Terms run in conjunction with the government school terms. We share the same term holidays and our classes begin and end at the same time in the year as the government schools.
Uniform & Costumes
A rehearsal uniform gives students a sense of professionalism at rehearsals and reinforces the nature of performance as group work.
The Young Australian Broadway Chorus rehearsal uniform consists of a YABC t-shirt, black pants and a pair of black jazz shoes. Students also need a separate performance t-shirt. As students progress through the levels they will also require tailored dance trousers and stylish satin braces and a cummerbund. Advanced dance classes will require tap shoes.
All costumes for performances are provided. The company is extremely proud of its substantial and varied costume collection. The wardrobe department is continually working on creative and distinctive designs which enhances a students on-stage experience.
