Developing young people through the performing arts

Course Guide

Beginners OnStage offers girls and boys aged 5-7 years fun and structured weekly classes in drama, song and dance.

Core Curriculum Objectives:

  • To develop students self confidence and self respect.
  • To ensure rehearsals and performances are interesting, enjoyable and challenging.
  • To instruct students in the basics of stagecraft.
  • To inspire students to discover and nurture their natural abilities and to strive to develop new skills.
  • To provide a hierarchy which allows students a clear developmental pathway.

The program develops theatre skills through play-based activities and each week students rehearse with a Drama Director, a Music Director, and a Choreographer.

All Beginners OnStage students perform twice a year on stage at the Union Theatre at Melbourne University. Students take part in a short play and song and dance items. Most importantly, they get to enjoy a full theatrical experience with costumes, scenery and lighting!

Classes consist of up to 18 students of similar age and ability. The weekly class runs for 90 minutes and classes follow goverment school term dates. We share the same term holidays and our classes begin and end at the same time in the year as the government schools.

Uniform & Costumes
A rehearsal uniform gives students a sense of professionalism at rehearsals and reinforces the nature of performance as group work. The Beginners OnStage rehearsal uniform consists of a rehearsal T-shirt featuring the Beginners OnStage logo. We ask students to wear black pants and black jazz shoes.

All costumes for performances are provided. The company is extremely proud of it's substantial and varied costume collection. The wardrobe department is continually working on creative and distinctive designs which enhances a students on stage experience.
